Macrowikinomics and Defining Social Problems

This is a piece from the Huffington Post that I used to talk about defining social problems and distinguishing between C. Wright Mills’ personal troubles and public issues. I think it’s useful because it focuses on the potential problems that users of Facebook, a popular social networking site, may face as well as the role that social networking plays in our society.

In class, the students divided up into groups and discussed the following questions:

What was your initial reaction?

How is this a personal trouble and/or public issue?

If you think this is problematic, how do you think we should address it?

The students were required to write what they discussed on a sheet of paper to be turned in. As a class, we also discussed how some of the students responded to these questions.
